I'm really proud of this one. The fast parts sound flashy but are not really hard. The harmonies are interesting without a page full of accidentals. The slow middle section features a pretty duet for horn and euphonium; I've cued this for alto and tenor sax.
I look forward to hearing an actual real band play this one!

I'm going to post a piece of new free music each two weeks!
Usually I play trombone or tuba, sometimes euphonium. Once a year, though, I drag out my $35 bass trombone and play for a week with a great church orchestra. The music is all big band or contemporary praise style. They always hire the best players in town and I feel honored to be asked.
The first time I did the gig, they wanted me to play loud. Louder. LOUDER! By the end of the first rehersal I was playing with a tone usually associated with chainsaws and Harleys.
Finally I realized the conductor wanted the bass trombone to be as loud as possible on anything marked MF or above. I even asked to be sure that's what he wanted.
I've been playing this gig for a dozen years, and I get a lot of nice comments, but I still feel like I'm peeling the paint off the sanctuary walls. Still, it's a fun gig and a great bunch of players. And I figure if they want me to back down a notch they would have told me by now!. |
