This one was commissioned by Johnny Martinez for his Junior Band at St. Mary's Catholic School in Fredericksburg, Texas. He wanted a grade II arrangement written to fit his instrumentation. After I finished I made some very minor changes, then added a couple of parts to fill out the standard concert band.
This melody is originally written in 12/8 time, but considering the grade I decided to set it in 4/4 and use dotted eighth and sixteenth patterns for the tune. The harmonies are contemporary but respectful of the original. |

The first band I directed had eight horns, three drums, and four guard... but beside that, they really weren't very good.Awful would be a better word. We had home-made uniforms and ragged instruments. Our colors: red and white.
Down the road there was an awsome band: five times our size, ten times our budget, state champions with decades of tradition. Red and white too; we looked like we equpped ourselves by rummaging through their dumpsters.
That first year I pulled in every beginner, marched them around the school, and headed off to our first parade.
There were two bands in the parade, we and our rivals, and we were put in the lead. Off we go, marching up main street. We reach the town's one red light and turn left. Then we turn right, right, and right again; we've gone around a block and now we're marching DOWN main street, back toward the red light. So far so good.
The float in front of us turns and we're face to face with the other band; both groups are heading toward the stop light, about 16 steps apart.
They're about to turn left, and we are supposed to do the same. But my poor little kids have never been in a parade; they think they are about to be run over and they panic! They scatter, heading back up the street and off to both sides. At least there weren't that many kids to collect back together. . |
