No, you don't HAVE to use this as a sing-along; it works perfectly well as an ordinary piece. Here's an easy, solidly scored medley of five very familiar Christmas carols, playable by any high school and most middle school bands. I chose not to write clever transitions or creative harmonies, but it doesn't sound watered down or rinky-dink.
But I wrote this piece for a specific purpose: a closing selection for that big day-before-Christmas-vacation school concert; we used to do two in one day, once at the high school and once at the middle. That's why I picked songs everyone knew and and made the voice cues really obvious.
I've used the sing-along at schools, community concerts, children's homes, and retirement communities; it's always a hit. Don't skip this one just because it's easy!

I'm going to post a piece of new free music each two weeks!
Sometimes a GE gimmick just pops into my head and I just can't get rid of it. And no, this isn't music for that show.
A band enters the field; their props include a chimney hung with stockings. One kid hides behind it, changes clothes, and halfway through the opener Santa pops out.
The music is a trumpet solo: 'Here Comes Santa Claus', of course. Search the pawn shops for a grungy but playable old horn.
Santa comes across the field, reaches into his bag and gives the soloist a new silver trumpet, then presents the drum major with a huge trophy, and finally gives the band director a lump of coal (a big ball of aluminum foil painted black ). Then he reaches into his bag one more time and throws candy into the crowd.
Anyone want to do this show? I would love to arrange it for you! |
